Wenpower CIC at the AntiRacist Education Festival: A Day of Insight and Impact

On Friday, June 21, 2024, Wenpower CIC had the privilege of attending the AntiRacist Education Festival (ARE Festival) at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Carmarthen. This impactful event, organized by The BAMEed Network, was a significant gathering dedicated to addressing and combating racial inequities within the education sector.

The BAMEed Network is a grassroots initiative committed to ensuring that diverse communities are substantively represented within the education workforce. They focus on the recruitment and retention of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic educators and leaders, aiming to bridge the gaps in support and progression opportunities. Their work includes hosting events, creating regional networks across the UK, and providing signposting and mentoring support to educators.

The festival was graced by the esteemed Professor David Olusoga OBE, a renowned historian, broadcaster, and author known for his dedication to uncovering hidden histories. His keynote speech set an inspiring tone for the event, emphasizing the importance of diversity and the ongoing struggle for racial equality in education and beyond.

Wenpower CIC's participation in the festival included a stimulating discussion with Darren Chetty. Darren, celebrated for his essay in "The Good Immigrant" and his co-authored works such as "How To Disagree: Negotiating Difference in a Divided World," shared profound insights on social justice

and education. His latest editorial work, "Welsh (Plural): Essays on the Future of Wales," underscores his commitment to these crucial issues.

We also had a vibrant stand at the festival, which became a hub for engaging interactions and fruitful drop-in sessions. Our team shared impactful insights about our services, which encompass personal and executive coaching, trauma therapy, organizational development, training facilitation, and consultancy in diversity, inclusion, race, and equality. The interest and enthusiasm from attendees were overwhelming, leading to several follow-up opportunities.

Noteworthy Connections

Our networking efforts were particularly rewarding as we connected with key figures and organizations, including:

  • Donna Ali, CEO of BE.Xcellence: BE.Xcellence is dedicated to the social mobility of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities. Our discussions with Donna were highly positive, opening avenues for future collaboration.

  • Diversity Anti-Racist Professional Learning (DARPL): Their focus on professional learning in anti-racism aligns closely with our mission.

  • National Academy for Educational Leadership Wales (NAEL): Engaging with NAEL highlighted shared goals in leadership and educational development.

  • WJEC CBAC and Book Council Wales: Both organizations showed keen interest in our work, and we look forward to exploring collaborative efforts.

Moving Forward

The ARE Festival was a significant milestone for Wenpower CIC, reinforcing our commitment to empowering individuals and organizations to reach their full potential. We are excited about the prospects of collaborating with the connections made and are dedicated to following up on the interests generated during the event.

At Wenpower CIC, we believe in the transformative power of education and the importance of an inclusive and equitable approach.
